LISTENER GUIDE

Listen on your iPhone, step by step.

Open your host’s ListenAcross link in Safari or scan their QR code. You do not need a ListenAcross account. Keep the page open and use headphones when you are near other attendees.

1. Choose what you want to hear

The language selector at the top changes website text only. The Audio language selector changes the speech and captions you receive. A language panel shows the speaker’s language, available outputs, and your current selection. Original audio means the host’s own voice; Translation means generated translated speech.

2. Start listening and enable sound

Tap Start listening. If prompted, tap Enable sound. A green checked playback button confirms that the browser allows sound. This does not mean the host has spoken yet. Waiting for speech is normal until audio arrives. Audio received is marked only after real audio data reaches your phone.

3. If the phone is silent

  1. Raise media volume and check whether sound is routed to Bluetooth headphones or another speaker.
  2. Open More options and use Test device sound. It plays a local tone without using translation allowance.
  3. Check whether the host is live or paused. Only the host can restore a paused broadcast or add minutes.
  4. Use the alternate connection if offered, or switch between venue Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  5. Keep captions open and ask a volunteer for help if the problem continues.

What the indicators can and cannot prove

Connection confirms a transport connection. Playback allowed confirms browser permission. Audio received confirms data reached the page. None of these can verify your device volume, selected Bluetooth output or whether you personally heard sound.

Background playback

Keep Safari in the foreground for the most reliable experience. Locking the phone or switching apps can interrupt audio depending on browser and device behaviour. An end-to-end rehearsal on your actual phone is more useful than a microphone level check alone.
